Treating Internal Hemorrhoids
The initial treatment for the hemorrhoids is to get relief from the symptoms. The following options are available for getting relief from the internal hemorrhoids.
Sitz bath - In order to improve the blood circulation and reduce the swelling and pain in the affected part, you could take Sitz bath wherein you will sit in warm water covering your hips/ buttocks. This natural treatment for hemorrhoids is commonly used.
Ice Packs - If the hemorrhoids are severe, apply an icepack at the anal part.
Apply petroleum jelly, hemorrhoid cream and suppositories, or cortisone creams to the area affected.
Cotton underwear and loose clothing should be worn.
Use moist toilet paper and wipe the anus after emptying the bowel.
Pain killers - These can help reduce the pain and itchiness but won’t cure hemorrhoids.
Enemas - These are bowel stimulants and if you have enema in plain warm water.Use warm water and have enema, which helps in eliminating the constipation and fecal impaction.
OTC medications
If the hemorrhoid is in its early stages, you can get this treated by OTC hemorrhoids treatment. The medications used for this are ointments, creams, laxatives, and petroleum jellies. The well-known method is to apply hemorrhoids cream that has hydrocortisone and antiseptics.
The treatments carried out for internal hemorrhoids are as follows.
Rubber Band Ligation - This treatment is carried out at the outpatient department; this is useful for treating 2nd degree internal hemorrhoids. This is a non-surgical procedure wherein a rubber band is tied on the tissue inflamed thereby reducing the blood flow.
Injection Sclerotherapy - This warrants injection of a chemical solution into the mucous membrane situated near the hemorrhoid. This solution helps in inflammation and closure of the veins resulting in the hemorrhoid to shrink.
Infrared Photocoagulation - is suitable for treating small/medium size hemorrhoids. Using an IR device, the surgeon applies IR heat on the hemorrhoids thereby coagulating the dilated veins. The blood vessels coagulate and stop the blood flow thereby eliminating the hemorrhoids.
Laser Coagulation - This technique is relatively new and in this treatment electric current is applied through the hemorrhoids. This new technique results in stopping the blood supply to the hemorrhoids which in turn causes the hemorrhoids to shrink.
Hemorrhoidectomy - a surgical procedure. The groups of hemorrhoid in the anal canal are surgically removed using a laser, cautery device or scalpel.
